I have never really understood, no, it’s more felt comfortable with, the concept of intercessions. Intercessions, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is asking others to pray for you. You ask your friends and family to pray for you. You ask the saints or the Virgin Mary to pray for you. Why? Really, why? Is there some mental block that makes us feel we are not worthy, that God won’t listen to us personally? Is it that we think that if others pray for us, or important saintly people pray for us, or a bunch of people pray for us then God will be moved to do something? God will know that this is more important than if we just pray ourselves? No? Why do we do it?
Jesus said that we should pray for each other. Why? Because we are all brothers and sister and we need to help each other. I think it comes from an innate need for community. That’s one of the reasons why we go to church. We need to know that whatever it is, we are not in this alone. Other people are helping us so it won’t be so bad.
Do we need someone else to pray for us? No. God knows your needs. You need to pray so that you can better hear what God is answering. Do we need saints and angels to pray for us, because they are closer to God? No. They are in Heaven with God but that does not negate the fact that God loves you. You, individually, personally, as a separate and distinct Child of God, are loved fully and completely by God. Do we need whole groups of people to pray for us? No. One person or two billion people asking is completely the same, in my opinion. We don’t change God with our prayers. God changes us. God will do what is best for you. Praying together in a group is helpful for you because then you know you are not alone. But you also have to remember, that you are never alone. Never. Ever. Alone. God is with you always. He looks out for you. He loves you. He does what is best for you.
That being said, do I ask people to pray for me? No, not really. I can’t think when I have or why I would. Do I pray for other people? Yes, of course, all the time! After all I have said, why would I? Two reasons. The first is that some people I know are not praying for themselves. Does God help them even if nobody prays? Yes, of course, He loves them whether they pray or not. Which brings me to the second and most important reason. Sometimes you need to pray to God for someone to just be with Him and know that it will all work out for the best. Do I still worry? While I am praying I don’t feel worried at all. Actually, the more I pray the less I worry.
Remember, praying for yourself is more important than having others pray for you. You need to strengthen that bond. You need to know that He looks out for you. He loves you. He does what is best for you. He is with you always.
Peace be with you.
