Science vs Religion

We have all heard the science vs religion issue. My question is, “Why is this an issue?” Up until comparatively recently science was a part of religion. The study of science was another way to understand God through the understanding of His Creation. That idea has been lost and I find that confusing and sad. Just because science chooses to study Creation should not mean that it is less focused on the Creator.

One time, I was in a scientific conversation with someone and they said something about Christians can’t understand this (whatever we were talking about). I said, ‘No, I understand it perfectly.’ I was then asked if I was a Christian, to wit, of course, I said, ‘yes’. Then was told, ‘Oh, you seemed so much smarter than that.’ As a matter of fact, God has blessed me with intelligence enough to know that science and religion are not at odds.

Science helps us to understand ‘how’ and ‘what’. What makes an object fall? How does electricity work? What is a star made of? How big is the universe?

Religion helps us to understand ‘why’ and ‘who’. Why are we here? Who made us? Why is there suffering in the world? Who created all that is?

These are completely different sets of questions and there isn’t any conflict. Why are we looking for conflict that isn’t there? Do we say that if you understand music you can’t believe in God? Of course not! That would be silly. So why do we say that science and religion are at odds when they are not.

· A Jesuit Priest is the one who came up with the Big Bang Theory.

· Sir Francis Bacon the founder of the scientific method once said, “It is true that a little philosophy (meaning science) inclineth man’s mind to atheism; but depth in philosophy (again meaning science) bringeth men’s minds to religion.” The deeper you look the more you will find God.

· Even Charles Darwin said, “I may say that the impossibility of conceiving that this grand and wondrous universe, with our conscious selves, arose through chance, seems to me the chief argument for the existence of God.”

· As Einstein, when asked about physics, put it, “I want to know God thoughts, the rest are details.”

The only people who think that Science and Religion are at odds are the Atheists. But what they don’t seem to realize is that Science is based on a belief in God. The underlying assumption of all Science is that we can figure it out, nature is knowable and works in an ordered, mathematical, scientific way. If it is all random, then an ordered, mathematical, scientific way of creation makes no sense. If you are an atheist and think that life and the universe started out of sheer coincidence and — luck, and then think that it should act in an ordered, mathematical, scientific way, is a baseless underlying assumption that topples everything that comes after.

Just saying.

Peace be with you.
